The Olivier Awards 2019

The Olivier Awards are one of our favorite nights of the year. A wonderful night to celebrate all we love about theatre. Usually hit shows such as Hamilton take home most of the Olivier Awards, therefore it was refreshing to see that this was not the case last night. “Come From Away” was nominated for nine Olivier Awards and walked away with four awards. “The Inheritance” and “Company” also took home four prizes. You can see the complete list of winners right HERE.
Here is what else happened.

1. Jason Manford was a great host!

Last week I wrote that Jason Manford will be a great host. Oh, and he didn’t disappoint. The red carpet arrivals were streamed on the Facebook page of The Olivier Awards and Jason Manford said during his interview, that he was very well prepared. He also mentioned he hopes to come up with a few jokes that everybody will enjoy. We think he succeed.
Come back soon, Jason Manford!

“In my experience, theatre ushers are the greatest actors in the West End. How they manage to keep a straight face when charging £35 for two drinks, a programme and a packet of Revels is beyond me.”

2. Matthew Bourne received a Special Olivier Award

Matthew Bourne now has eight Olivier Awards. Just like actress Dame Judy Dench and designer William Dudley. Last night he received the Special Award to recognize his contribution to dance. In his red carpet interview he shared, that his swans would be giving a special performance for which they had to travel to London that morning at 5am.

As expected his rendition of Swan Lake got standing ovations. I still think it was a genius stroke to have a male cast as swans.

“I’m just an East End boy who had great parents who took him to the London theatre as a young man – always in the cheapest seats at the top of the theatre but that mattered not one bit.”

3. Sharon D Clarke rocked the stage and then moved the audience

Actress Sharon D Clarke gave a heart wrechning performance of Lot’s Wife from Caroline, or Change. Have you heard the song before? A great song that reminds us of Jennifer Hudson, Aretha Franklin and Jennifer Holliday. Listen for yourself.

The reviews of the last weeks only sung the highest praises when it came to Sharon D Clarkes titel role as Caroline Thibodeaux in Caroline, or Change. So her nomination was not a surprise. And neither was her well deserved win.
Her accepting speech was wonderfully moving and paid tribute to her parents who are no longer here.

“For my mum and dad who are no longer with us … Caroline’s strength, dignity and love comes from my mum … To every mother who is out there doing the best for her child.”

4. Red carpet glamour

On a night like the Olivier Awards the people come out and shine. And they didn’t disappoint.

It’s been a pleasure. See you next year, Olivier Awards.
